Acne and Acne Scars Treatments

Acne breakouts? Acne scarring? Large pores? Sound familiar? Which acne and acne scars treatments to choose from?

It doesn’t matter if you 18 or 80 years old. Unless you are the lucky ones with good genes, you may never escape the onset of acne at least once. And as if it is not bad enough and to add to our misery, it takes on a whole new life of enlarged pores, sunspots, fine lines, and wrinkles as our skin ages. Even when you’re doing your best with proper diet, exercise, and skincare, there are still uncontrollable hormones and a decrease in collagen production.

But never fear! No matter what your age or acne woes, there are solutions! There are quite a few options for acne and acne scars treatment available in the market. It doesn’t take much to achieve beautiful clear, smooth, scar-free skin, but before we get to solutions, let’s learn about acne and clear up some misconceptions about acne.

Acne: it’s not just pimples

“Oh my god! My face broke out!” It always happens at the worst possible time. Before an important interview, or before you step out on a first date, or before a photo shoot. Believe it…if you have acne, you aren’t alone. According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, about 50 million Americans have acne.

Acne Myths:

  • Only teenagers get acne – not only, but all ages can also have onset of acne
  • Popping pimples makes them go away faster – improper handling could lead to further infection or scarring
  • The term “breakout” is commonly used to describe acne on the face, but not all types of acne spread across or limited to the face

Acne Facts:

  • Acne is simply clogged pores. Pores get clogged up because of excess production of oil (sebum) or dead skin cells
  • Bacteria infection from clogged up impurities
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Ingrown hairs are…ingrown.

Successfully treating acne requires proper identification of the acne that you have. Acne may be non-inflammatory or inflammatory.

Subtypes of acne include whiteheads, blackheads, pustules, papules, nodules, and cysts

What about large pores?

Large pores aren’t on this list, but more often than not, large pores are the aftermath of acne and or improper treatment. Our skin loses its elasticity over time that enables our skin to “spring” back from the over irritation or stretched skin around pore areas, hence open and enlarged pores or wrinkles.

What causes large pores?

  • An oily complexion – overactive sebaceous glands
  • Sun-damaged to skin collagen
  • Saggy skin from poor elasticity
  • Over scrubbing can irritate your skin, making your pores look larger

Large pores – Prevention/Treatments

To prevent or treat large pores, you should –
1. Cleanse your face with warm water twice a day
2. Exfoliate
3. Only use non-comedogenic skin care products and makeup
4. Protect your skin with sunscreen every day
5. Be gentle with your skin
6. Have sagging skin treated
7. Use products that contain retinol
8. Other at-home options for treating acne

Acne and Acne Scars Treatments

Acne

Skin breakouts can happen at any age. They can be caused by the food you eat, poor hygiene, and hormone imbalance. Not only can breakouts be frustrating, but they can also leave scars or enlarged pores on your face and other areas of your body.

There are plenty of products on the market that you can use to treat breakouts or even reduce the appearance of scars. Salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acid, retinoid, and lactic acid are some of the ingredients to look out for in products to treat acne.

If you choose to buy over-the-counter products, make sure that they are well-tested and come from a trustworthy source. Nothing is more important than your skin!

Acne Scars

Scars can be a painful reminder of times that you may prefer to forget. But acne scars don’t have to be permanent. Some of the ingredients listed above can help relieve acne scarring. Most of the time, though, you may need something more powerful. You may need a dermatologist or aesthetician on your side to assist you on your journey back to beautiful skin.

There are a variety of medical acne scar treatments available that will resolve acne scars issues. These scars are stubborn and may require a combination of approaches to improve the appearance of your skin. Your dermatologist or aesthetician will guide you to the right treatments for your skin type and assess the extent of your skin condition. Some of our favorite acne and scar treatments are:

IPL PhotoFacial

Do you have ugly acne scars from past breakouts? Nordlys laser skin resurfacing is a non-invasive treatment that substantially reduces the appearance of unsightly acne scars.

HydraFacial

Ready to exfoliate dead skin cells, extract acne-causing bacteria and debris in clogged pores? A Hydrafacial can reduce or eliminate acne breakouts and minimize acne scars from previous breakouts.

PRP Facial®

Have you heard about Kim Kardashian’s vampire facial? That’s a PRP Facial. PRP naturally stimulates your body’s increased production of collagen & elastin – which are the building blocks of smooth, clear, youthful, healthy skin. As the skin repairs itself, wrinkles and lines are smoothed, tightness and elasticity are improved, and discolorations are reduced.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers aren’t just for reducing fine lines and wrinkles or plumping up lips and cheekbones. In some cases, using soft tissue fillers reduce the appearance of scars. They can also reduce the size of large pores because they firm and plump up the skin. Our favorite fillers are:

  • Juvaderm eliminates moderate to severe wrinkles & folds, treats flattened cheeks, and provides lift and fullness.
  • Restylane provides subtle lip enhancement and adds volume to the nasolabial folds around the cheek areas.
  • Belotero fills deep creases with volume while being delicate enough to naturally remedy fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Versa plumps lips, add volume to cheeks and fills wrinkles.
